The question of what to wear under a specific garment comes up more often than any other practical question in lingerie. A bias-cut dress that shows every seam, a sheer blouse that makes colour visible, a fine knit that catches on lace trim: these are specific problems with specific solutions. This guide goes through the most common outerwear types and what works under each.

Sheer and semi-sheer blouses

Under a sheer blouse, colour is the first consideration. White underwear is not invisible under white fabric; it reads as a bright white shape against the skin tone, which is usually more visible than a colour that matches the skin. Nude shades that match the wearer's skin tone disappear more effectively, which is why the range of nude options available has expanded significantly in recent years.

Seam placement is the second consideration. A bra with a horizontal seam across the cup will show through a sheer blouse as a visible line. A moulded cup or a seam-free construction is less visible. Lace, which has an open structure, reads differently under sheer fabric than a solid cup does: it can look intentional rather than accidental, which is a matter of preference.

Structured blazers and tailored jackets

Under a structured blazer, the main consideration is the neckline of the blazer and how much of the bra will be visible when the jacket is open. A plunge bra with a low centre front works well under a blazer worn open over a low-cut top. A balconette or demi works well under a blazer worn closed, where the bra will not be visible at all.

Fabric bulk is also worth considering. A heavily padded bra adds volume under a fitted blazer, which can change the way the jacket sits across the chest. A lightly lined or unlined bra in a smooth fabric sits more flatly and allows the jacket's structure to read as intended.

Bias-cut dresses and fine knitwear

Bias-cut fabric moves with the body and clings to everything underneath it. Seams, lace edges, and elastic channels all show through. The most effective solution is a smooth, seam-free brief in a fabric that does not add texture: microfibre or a fine cotton-elastane blend. Thong styles eliminate the visible brief line but introduce their own considerations around comfort and coverage.

Fine knitwear catches on lace and rough textures. A bra with lace trim or textured fabric will snag on a fine knit over time, which damages both garments. Under knitwear, smooth fabrics are the practical choice: moulded cups, microfibre, or smooth cotton. The same applies to slips worn under knitwear.

The underwear-for-outerwear guide on this site covers additional clothing types including coats, evening wear, and activewear worn as casualwear. It is free to read and updated seasonally.
